Man Falls Backwards Down Concrete Stairs and Breaks his $1M Violin E-mail
Thursday, 14 February 2008

London- David Garrett, the former model, named the David Beckham of the musical scene, said he tripped when leaving Barbican Hall after a violin performance. Unfortunately, he was carrying his 18th century violin and smashed it to pieces. Garrett had bought the 1772 violin for $1 million in 2003, and is devastated. Apparently, he is in denial as well because he is hoping it can be repaired in New York. This was not exactly a graceful fall said witnesses. One witnesses said it was the most humorous thing he has ever seen. He recalled Garrett flipping around backwards, falling down the concrete stairs, and then screaming, "My violin." The violin was a G.B. Guadagnini, and unfortunately he will be playing with a loaner for his Valentine's Day concert. Garrett told the associated press, "I hope and pray that it can be fixed, but if it can't, I hope my insurance policy will let me buy another great violin," the 26-year-old musician said. To learn more visit www.david-garrett.com, and in the photo below, pretend that laptop=violin since no one actually seems to have photographed the violin in mid-air.

Robert in Seattle, im pretty sure that thats not an actual picture of him seeing as how the article says that he flips towards his back and the violin is no where to be seen.

Recipe: how to create a modern 'genius superstar'. Take one good looking but unknown average musician, give him a violin (preferably one you bought at a boot sale for 20 quid) and push him down a flight of stairs. Then tell the press he landed on a priceless Stradivarius. BOIINNNGGG!!! Result - headlines around the world and live appearances on the news.

Man, I play and teach the violin proffessionally and have an expensive instrument and I would never walk downstairs if it was not in a case. Maybe he sneezed "Tchaikovsky" before he tripped down the stairs. Or mabye he was practicing a passage in his concerto while running up and down the stairs, you know multitasking that is what us musicians do. Actually I don't know what you would be doing at the top of a flight of concrete stairs with your strad/guadanini. It was almost reminicent of Micheal Jackson dangling his baby over the railing of his hotel room or the crocidile hunter dancing his baby in front of a raging crocidile. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Maybe he will learn the next time.

"One witnesses said it was the most humorous thing he has ever seen ? He need to get out more ... A man hurts himself and break a 1M$ masterpiece...how on earth is this funny ? wtf"

You're the one who needs to get out more. Eventually you'll find out that the funniest things aren't found in an episode of "Everybody Loves Raymond". I don't think it would be funny if he sustained serious injury, but it's certainly funny that someone with a million dollar violin would have to learn a hard lesson about buying a 100 dollar hard case for it. Most of us had the same experience with some sort of valuable item in our lives, and we learned that stairs and gravity don't discriminate between a 200 dollar ipod and a million dollar violin. At least he only broke his violin and not his hands before the concert, right?

Good luck with the insurance company! The fact that there's a picture of him laying there with his notebook next to him along with the fact that the violin was obviously not in its protective carrying case means that he will likely have to bear full responsibility for his loss. You don't carry million dollar violins down concrete stairs while also juggling an open notebook at the same time. But then again, I'm not the David Beckham of the violin world. What do I know?!

It's called a violin case, the modern cases are virtual indestructible.

I'm not sure why he found the fall so humorous - there's nothing humorous about it, really. More than anything, it's sad - this guy obviously loved that violin enough to spend ONE MILLION DOLLARS on it - do you think he might be taking all of this hard enough without some doucheface laughing at him and rubbing it in?

Savages.

Oh noes!!! That's just too bad. I love violins, and a violin made in the 1700's is like a piece of history. This is a sad loss.

You would think with that expensive of a violin, he would be putting it into a hard pack case before he ever leaves his chair.
