The Fling just posted a few new songs to their myspace page. Probably my favorite new band, their music is extremely well-done and the words well-written. Also, there are new tour dates posted on their site. Be sure to check back soon for more on The Fling. |

I have to say that I wasn't sure where Luke Dubsky would go or what he would do when he would wake me up every morning singing "There is a town, in New Or-leans..." just before he gave me a horse-bite on my leg. I do know that he is a dear friend, and eternally loyal, and spent the last few years of his life giving out food, clothing and conversations with locals in surf spots and drug rehabilitation centers around the world. Now he is back in good ole Enumclaw, Washington, where he put together a melodic gem of a northwest surfing/music video recently. I have to say that the Steve Dubsky cameo at the end is my favorite part. |

Is tonight... You better make it out. There have been promises made of the single-handed ressurrection of the hyphy movement tonight. I'm also going to watch everyone get shit-faced 'cause I'm still a little bit sick. For more information check out the Sparrow Love Crew website. |

What would it be like to know the vast majority of Generation X and Y has seen you naked? When I saw this photo I was blown away. This is Spencer Elden, the infamous baby chasing a single from Nirvana's Nevermind album cover. He is now 17 and finishing up his final year of high school in LA. It is amazing to think of the part he played in music history without ever having experienced it. He must've been about 3 when Kurt Cobain died. Its a good thing that mp3's live forever. Jason Lazarus, a photographer and college instructor, shot Elden at his home in Los Angeles. The shoot was in conjunction with the Nirvana Project, which Lazarus started by asking some of his friends to relate their first experience with the revolutionary Seattle rock group. I couldn't tell you a thing about the first time I heard Soundgarden or The Chili Peppers, but I was in 4th grade, on the bottom bunk in John Lyon's room with a shitty cassette recorder when I first heard Something in the Way. |

I decided today that I'd trying calling in to AT&T to pay my phone bill, and was placed on hold for about ten minutes while waiting to talk with a human being. Once on hold, I switched my cell to speaker phone so I'd be able to work on other stuff. Shortly thereafter, I realized the song playing was a weird digital brass-section version of Eric Clapton's If I Saw You In Heaven. I strangely found myself singing out loud. What a great song, right? It got me thinking of some of the iconic tunes of yesteryear, and I couldn't help but think of Danzig's Mother. Once, while on a road trip to New York, my brother and I bought a cassette tape (in Bismark, North Dakota) of a live Danzig concert and this was the only song we both knew all of the words to. We played it I think about ten times in a row at one point, yelling "Mother" and pounding our fists in the air harder each time. I decided to pull up an interview from what looks like the early 1980s of Glen Danzig himself. Hope you like it. He's actually quite eloquent-sounding at times. |

It has been a while since we have written about any new musical favorites but I came across these guys recently and was into them instantly. Vampire Weekend are out of New York and play a unique brand of pop rock. They have a very polished and distinctive style that sounds like a tropical version of The Libertines. Check out their music if you get a chance. |

Here's a classic interview from a 1984 episode of BBC's Earsay. This is what Morrisey looked like before his torso got huge and the the Taco-Billies took him from us. This past Christmas, my whole family watched a Morrissey concert on TV from his last visit to LA, and my dad was kind of weirded out...and kept asking us if he was gay. We just kept shrugging. |
