Interview With Dr. Dog E-mail
Monday, 14 April 2008

Our Marissa Ross got the chance to have a little chat with Taxi of Psychedelic Rock Group Dr. Dog. Here is how it all went down...

I found out on a Wednesday afternoon I would be interviewing my favorite band on Thursday at noon. I ran around my house, singing at the top of my lungs, “I’m going to looooove you! Till the day I was born! And I’m going to caaallll yooou! So keep your ear to the horrrn!” Oh, man. I had just purchased Passed Away, Volume One that morning, and had completely fallen head over heels in love with Dr. Dog for the sixth time.

Back in 2006, I was drinking fo’ties with some pals. One good and very wise friend said, “Marissa, listen to this. They will be your new favorite band.” I was then subjected to the melodic bliss of the Takers and Leavers EP. It hit a chord that hadn’t been touched since I got Rubber Soul when I was eleven. I sank into the couch, utterly taken away by the awe-inspiring harmonies and the lyrics that spoke of all of my heart’s inner clangings I could never quite string the right words together to express. I felt like a schoolgirl again, wide-eyed and open hearted, trailing like a puppy behind a series of albums that I devoured in unconditional love.

Pinhead Gunpowder Secret Show E-mail
Monday, 04 February 2008
Sometimes when my friends and I get caught up in nostalgia we start listing bands of the yesteryear that we would like to see, and how much we would be willing to pay to see them. The list has pretty much remain unchanged over the last 10 years… Always headlining our dreamworld tours are Minor Threat, Jawbreaker, Screeching Weasel, and East Bay star-studded pop punk foursome, Pinhead Gunpowder. Early last week a fraction of my dreaming in a vacuum became reality. Read on...photos by Shanty Cheryl.

Interview with Sparrow Love Crew E-mail
Monday, 07 January 2008

The beats are hella tight, like Helen Keller right, so you know it's fresh and it's outta sight...we have to hurry so that we can eat dinner and have our meeting, so that we can get over to Detroit Bar and see the first of the weekly shows that Sparrow Love Crew is putting on this month. Click read more below to see the entire interview with Kid Wizard from Sparrow Love Crew:

How long ago did you guys first decide to create the Sparrow Love Crew?

We have all known each other for about five or six years. It started with Devoux, his brother, and Mikey Brixx. They went by Sparrow Love Crew and Duke Danger and I had our own group called Winnie the Crew.

We joined forces and started playing shows a little over a year ago under the name Sparrow Love Crew.

Interview with Voxhaul Broadcast E-mail
Monday, 10 December 2007
Interview by Marissa A. Ross

It’s a fresh fall night, the tail end of September, as the line starts to extend down the block outside The Echo in Los Angeles. There’s a buzz along the wall as patrons turn into fans- strangers talking to one another about new EP’s and constant whines wondering why we haven’t been let inside. Finally, a man predictably dressed in black opens the door and begins slapping wristbands on. The club is empty but before I even get my beer, the floor is filled.

I was busy peeling the labels off my Stella Artois when the crowd started cheering. I made my way to the front as four young men took the stage. They were all smiles and laughs behind their mops of hair, strapping on their instruments. A modest smile creeps up on the singer’s face as he approaches the mic to announce that Voxhaul Broadcast is ready to go. He barely finishes his sentence before the guitars start up. David Dennis takes a breath and begins wailing, the crowd reacting simultaneously, dancing and singing along with him.

JE: What made you decide to put out your album in blue and burgundy rather than other colors, say pink or pea-green?

TA: The burgundy palette was suggested by the cover artist, Ryan Heshka. I told him I wanted an otherworldly feel.  We worked together on the image concept.  He suggested the pale blue for the title.  I wasn't sure at first, but he showed me some other works of his that incorporated blue accents into the same palette and I was convinced.  I love it, it really works.

Interview with The Avett Brothers E-mail
Monday, 26 November 2007
The Avett Brothers are an exceptional band that puts up no front and simply tells it how it is. If it hurts, they sing the pain. If it's uncertainty, they sing the questions out loud. If it's happiness, they sing notes covered with smiley faces. The men behind the soul-touching songs are no less exceptional. The band draws inspiration from their roots, the gifts they've been given, and their undeniable love of music and artistic expression. TLS Music Editor Jason Estopinal sat down with frontman Scott Avett to talk about books, life on the road and God. More...
