Seven Wonders of the Fashion World E-mail
Tuesday, 01 April 2008
Thinking of the vanity, frivolity and financial misjudgment exercised in my pursuit of fashion's latest and greatest can be depressing. The remedy? Why, it is the same solution that should be used for any negative feelings resulting from intense introspection. Find someone worse and laugh at them. Why not? You may have embarrassed yourself when you had a few too many and tried to get "handsy" with the waitress at the Flamingo, but you are not the one still wearing your Vegas visor whilst face down in your 3rd, 4th, and 5th Heineken and a Hot Dog which now cover the video poker screen in front of you. Also, your Vegas visor is not lined with Swarovski crystals. To help you see the connection, here are the most absurdly priced items fashion has ever produced:

1. Fashion's Most Expensive Sneakers

Image

The Nike Air Force One "So Cals" were made by Atlanta sneaker shop Laced Up as part of a new service called Solitaire Kicks. The service is offered by Laced Up with the help of Prriya & Chintans Couture and Jewelry, who provide fashion consulting to customers when customizing their shoes adorned with yellow, blue or white diamonds as well as silver and gold. The first pair, worth an estimated $50,000 were presented to rapper Big Boi at the launch party for Solitaire Kicks. This is a great item to be wearing when you forget your wallet and you don't want to have to go back home to get it for something as little as Fourthmeal. This is not a great item to be wearing on the last train out of Harlem.

 2. Fashion's Most Expensive Bikini

This may look familiar to the avid Sports Illustrated reader, as it was used for Molly Sims centerfold in the 2006 Swimsuit Issue. It was created by fashion designer Susan Rosen with collaboration from Steinmetz Diamonds. According to this site, the bikini features over 15 carats of D Flawless diamonds, including a 51 carat D Flawless Pear Shape, a 30 carat D Flawless emerald...blah, blah, blah. Anyway, this thing costs $30 million and I promise you that her nipples can cut glass.

3. Fashion's Most Expensive Jeans

The Guinness Book of World Records lists Gucci's Genius Jeans as the most expensive off the rack denim at $3,134. However, this was trumped recently by Forbes' fashion showcase of Escada's Swarovski crystal-encrusted jeans (left) which sell for $10,000 US. Impressive price tag, but the only thing that could make these look worse would be a bedazzled Tonya Harding Edition signature on the back pocket. In classic fashion, Levi's has clubbed the knee of both these denim imposters with the purchase of a pair of their own (right), manufactured in the 1880's, for $46,532 on eBay, making them the most expensive jeans ever sold.

4. Fashion's Most Expensive Purse

In early 2007, high-end fashion label Louis Vuitton released their most expensive handbag, the Louis Vuitton Tribute Patchwork Bag. It was created using various samples of fabric and hardware from other LV bags. Only 24 numbered pieces were produced, which sold out immediately at the price of $45,000 a piece. It was rumored that most of the lucky ladies who scored this purse reported that they felt the appearance of the bag represented them well as a person: An overpriced cluster-fuck of stupid looking things.

5. Fashion's Most Expensive Shoes

The Rapiécés Reprisés, made by the French company Berluti, are the pinnacle of fashion quality in both material and construction. They are a combination of the best elements of English and Parisian shoemaking and use only the finest quality leather available. Each pair is unique in color due to their tanning process. Retail price is $1,830 if you are in the market. However, if you are in the market, your feet probably don't touch the ground anyway.

6. Fashion's Most Expensive Dress

The world's most expensive dress was worn by Samantha Mumba to a movie premiere in 2004. Designed by Scott Henshall, the dress contains over 3,000 diamonds in the shape of a spider web and is worth $5 million. A note to Scott: If you are out to get all the hype associated with creating the fashion world's most expensive dress, set the bar a little higher. Susan Rosen topped you by roughly $25,000,000 and she was working with a bikini. Lesson learned: Additional fabric is a waste of time.

 7. Fashion's Most Expensive Watch

Fetching a price of $1.5 million, Vacheron Constantin's Tour de I'lle was made in commemoration of the Swiss fashion company's 250th anniversary. It is a double-face watch with features like horological complications and astronomical indications. There were only 7 produced and the original took over 10,000 man hours to develop. It features 18-carat silvered gold dial with a hand-sewn alligator leather band and pink gold buckle. Oh, and Stephen Hawking lives inside.
