Ten Questions - Andy and Chris from IM-KING E-mail
Wednesday, 09 January 2008
This week we sat down with Andy and Chris from IM-KING (Imaginary Kingdom) for a chat. They shared with us for a bit on what it is like to run a new apparel company in this day and age, as well as what their thoughts are on the industry in general. It proves to be an interesting read and we hope you like it. Make sure to keep an eye out for their new releases this year, and check out their site at www.im-king.com.

1. What is IM-KING? How did the idea come about?

It's short for imaginary kingdom and imaginary kingdom means great ideas. Everything we do is well thought out and we try our best to execute our ideas in our clothes.

2. Who started it? What are their backgrounds?

Andy and Polo. Andy came from previous experience in the clothing industry and polo is the business mind with experience from other successful ventures.

3. What would you say if asked to describe what type of brand you are?

We make clothes for you, your mom, your dad, your cousin in jail, the underpaid kid from del taco, and the 2nd string quarterback on the jv football team. If you like nice clothes that don't discriminate then our brand is for you. Is it streetwear? Is it skate? Its lifestyle.

4. What is in the IPod all day at work?

Since chris has started. 80s and new wave all day. Madonna, New Order, Depeche Mode, Modern
Talking...shit most people wouldn't listen to.

5. How do you deal with all the pro hos?

Holler at us, our new warehouse is huge. We gotta place for you. We're not that big so I'm guessing
we'd get stuck with the 5's and 6's no 10's.

6. What do you forecast being big for 2008?

Cleaner clothes. I'm calling '08 the year people make clothes for the grown man and sexy. Tone it down a little. The market seems like they're tired of the neon and bright colors.

7. What is your impression of the size and rate of growth of the streetwear market in the last year or so? How does IM-KING fit into this equation?

It has grown really fast but its getting saturated with all these new brands hoping up left and right. We just want to stay on top of our game and make clothes people don't regret buying.

8. What are brands/designers that really impress or inspire you? What else is a source of inspiration?

Stussy, Obey and LRG. Stussy has been around for so long yet they still push out some hot stuff every season. Obey with the propaganda marketing is amazing how far they went because they don't really even advertise that much in print ads but yet everyone you know owns an item from obey. LRG is just a marketing genius you can't even get into how big they got. We just want to be a
fourth of how big they are and we would be content.

9. What is next for IM KING 2008? Any special projects in the works that you can talk about?

Right now we have all the cut and sews done til holiday '08. Expect a lot of clean jackets and outerwear from us. Also expect a lot of marketing through print ads with Vapors, Complex
and Antenna magazine.

10. Anything else you want to mention? Any shout-outs?

Come check us out at Magic in February. We'll be showing the spring, summer and fall
line. Thanks to anyone that has supported us from the beginning and also thank you Josh for believing in us. Oh yeah...Andy would like to say hi to the Hypebeast forum. Check out the new website im-king.com.
